And yet, this small, discreet device may be the most important item in your home. Not by exaggeration\u2014by arithmetic. In Quebec, there are on average more than 18,000 fires each year. And if a fire broke out in your home tonight, you would have less than 3 minutes to evacuate. Three minutes. That\u2019s how long it takes for a situation to go from manageable to deadly.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The only device that can warn you in time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a fire, it\u2019s not the flames that kill first\u2014it\u2019s the smoke. It spreads quickly, fills rooms, reduces visibility to zero, and makes airways unusable\u2014often before occupants even realize what\u2019s happening. A smoke alarm is the only way to be alerted in time to act. Not the neighbor, not the smell of smoke, not intuition\u2014the alarm. It can make the difference between a successful evacuation and a tragedy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where to install it and how to maintain it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having just one smoke alarm in the home is not enough. You need one on every floor, including the basement, where heating equipment is often located and where fires can start without anyone noticing until it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An installed alarm doesn\u2019t mean a working alarm. Batteries run out, devices age, sensors degrade. That\u2019s why you should test them at least twice a year, when the clocks change\u2014an easy reminder that fits naturally into your routine. And when it\u2019s time to replace it, don\u2019t guess: check the date printed directly on the unit by the manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Responsibility is personal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no safety net that makes up for a lack of preparedness. Firefighters respond quickly\u2014but not in under 3 minutes. Fire prevention starts at home, with simple, regular, non-negotiable actions.
