Carbon monoxide is the most striking example. Every year in Quebec, this toxic gas is responsible for numerous poisonings. It cannot be seen, smelled, or felt, and it does not irritate the eyes or respiratory tract. Victims often remain unaware until symptoms incapacitate them\u2014or worse. Understanding its sources and adopting the right habits can literally save your life.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Gas from Combustion, All Around Us<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carbon monoxide is released when appliances or vehicles burn fuel such as propane, wood, or fuel oil. What&#8217;s important to understand is that these devices are not inherently dangerous in all circumstances. Their use generally poses no health risk if they are used in a well-ventilated area and according to the manufacturer&#8217;s specifications. The problem arises when these conditions are not met.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the main sources of CO are non-electric heating appliances like oil furnaces, wood-burning fireplaces, slow-combustion stoves, or propane heaters; internal combustion engine vehicles like cars, snowmobiles, and boats; natural gas or propane appliances like stoves, refrigerators, or propane water heaters; gasoline-powered tools and appliances like lawnmowers, saws, or generators; and finally, outdoor appliances like barbecues, oil lamps, and camping stoves.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When Danger Materializes: High-Risk Situations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poisonings do not happen by chance. They are almost always the result of one of the following three situations. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first: the appliance is faulty or poorly maintained. A blocked chimney or a furnace that has not had its annual maintenance are classic examples of situations that can lead to CO accumulation.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second: the appliance is used in an enclosed or insufficiently ventilated space. Running a car engine in a garage\u2014even if the door is open\u2014represents a real danger, regardless of the type of garage (attached to the house, detached, or temporary shelter). The same applies to remote-starting a vehicle parked in a garage, or using gasoline-powered tools in a garage or shed.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third, and perhaps the most avoidable: inappropriate use of an appliance. Using a propane heater inside the house, installing a gasoline generator in an attached garage, operating a propane barbecue indoors, or starting a car with its exhaust pipe blocked by snow are all behaviors that can cause poisoning.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Power Outage: A Particularly Risky Context<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winter power outages sometimes push people to improvise heating solutions. This is where the danger becomes particularly insidious. Never heat your home with gas-powered appliances such as a stove, space heater, camping heater, or barbecue. If you must use a generator, install it outside the house or garage, as far as possible from doors and windows. In the event of a prolonged outage in cold weather, check if your municipality has opened temporary shelters.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On Vacation, Danger Doesn&#8217;t Take a Break<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cottage, fishing camp, RV, tent trailer\u2014vacations do not protect against CO. Fuel-burning appliances can cause poisoning in any context if they are used in a poorly ventilated area or are poorly maintained. Always bring a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm and regularly check that it is working. In case of suspicious symptoms, even without an alarm: go outside immediately, contact the Quebec Poison Control Centre at 1 800 463-5060, and dial 9-1-1 if fire services are accessible.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beware of Arenas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less frequently mentioned, the risk of poisoning in arenas is very real. Toxic gases mainly come from the exhaust fumes of combustion appliances such as ice resurfacers and propane or gasoline-powered edgers. These appliances can release carbon monoxide or nitrogen dioxide, causing poisoning whether you are on the ice or in the stands. If you experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, or fatigue within minutes of arriving at an arena, leave the premises immediately and dial 9-1-1.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Precautions That Make a Difference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prevention relies on four fundamental actions. First, install a carbon monoxide alarm in areas where sources of this gas are present. Second, never use appliances or vehicles that can release CO inside a room, shelter, or vehicle. Third, strictly adhere to the maintenance and safety rules for each appliance\u2014for example, have the chimney swept regularly. Finally, call on qualified personnel for the maintenance of vehicle exhaust systems and combustion appliances.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In Summary: Habits to Adopt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Never use cooking or heating appliances designed for outdoor use indoors\u2014barbecue, generator, camping heater, camping stove. These appliances can cause potentially fatal carbon monoxide poisoning. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never run a vehicle engine in a garage, even with the door open.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install a ULC-approved CO alarm in your home, and bring a battery-powered one on every trip to a cottage, RV, or camp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain your combustion appliances annually: furnace, chimney, vehicle exhaust system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case of a power outage, only use appliances designed and approved for indoor use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the alarm sounds or symptoms appear (headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue): go outside immediately, dial 9-1-1, and do not re-enter until authorized by firefighters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If in doubt, call the Quebec Poison Control Centre: 1 800 463-5060.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carbon monoxide leaves no room for improvisation.
