Wood heating: essential tips for preventing fires in your home

Wood heating is a popular and economical solution in many Quebec households, especially during the long winters. Warm and inviting, it brings undeniable comfort to the home. However, if poorly maintained or improperly used, it can quickly become a source of danger. On the occasion of Fire Prevention Week, it is more relevant than ever to recall the best practices to adopt to enjoy the warmth of wood safely. And the good news is that a few simple steps are enough to considerably reduce the risks.

Start with an annual chimney sweeping

Chimney maintenance is the foundation of any safe wood heating system. It is recommended to have it swept at least once a year. Spring is the ideal time for this cleaning, as combustion residues—such as soot and creosote—are easier to dislodge after the heating season. Neglected sweeping can lead to a chimney fire, one of the most frequent causes of residential fires.

Use a fireplace and control your fires

The use of a closed fireplace or a protective screen is strongly advised to prevent flying embers and reduce the risk of burns. It is also important to never leave a fire unattended, especially in the presence of children or pets. To maintain a controlled fire and avoid overheating, it is better to burn small amounts of wood at a time. A fire that is too intense can damage the chimney flue and increase the risk of an accident.

Choose the right wood

The quality of the wood you use has a major influence on the safety of your installation. Well-dried wood burns more efficiently, produces less smoke, and generates fewer deposits in the chimney. Conversely, burning green or damp wood leads to incomplete combustion that promotes the accumulation of creosote, a highly flammable substance.

Ban accelerants

It can be tempting to use an accelerant to start or revive a fire quickly, but this practice is extremely dangerous. Whether in liquid form like gasoline or alcohol, or in gel form, these products can cause uncontrollable flames in seconds and cause serious burns or trigger a major fire.

Install the right detectors in the right places

Even when following all safety rules, it is essential to have functional detectors in your home. Smoke alarms should be placed in recommended strategic locations, such as hallways, near bedrooms, and by stairways. It is also essential to install a carbon monoxide alarm in all rooms where a wood-burning appliance is located. This odorless and colorless gas can be fatal without you even realizing it. A detector can quite simply save your life.

Wood heating is safe when properly maintained and used responsibly. In summary, here are the five essential habits to adopt right now:

  • Sweep the chimney at least once a year, ideally in the spring.
  • Use a fireplace or a fire screen to prevent sparks and burns.
  • Burn dry wood, in small quantities and in a controlled manner.
  • Avoid accelerants, whether liquid or gel.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the right places throughout the house.

Fire prevention starts at home—and you are the one primarily responsible for it. Don’t wait for an incident to occur before taking action: adopt these good habits today and protect your family.
